South Indian Tomato Rice Recipe:

1 cup basmati rice or normal rice soaked 20 minutes
10 cashews
1 tbsp ghee or butter
½ tbsp oil
1 small cinnamon stick
1 tbsp of poppy seeds
5 cloves
1 star anise
1 bay leaf
½ mustard seeds
1 medium sized onion,finely sliced
½ tbsp ginger garlic paste
4 large sized tomatoes
1 green chili, slitted
½ carrot chopped
¼ cup peas
1 small potato, cubed
3 to 4 beans, chopped
½ tsp red chili powder
¼ tsp turmeric
salt to taste
coriander leaves finely chopped
2tbsp of mint, finely chopped
2 cups water


Take juice of 4 tomatoes using a blender and keep a side.Soak Basmati rice/Normal rice for 20 minutes. Drain water, add 2 cups of hot water and cook rice until soft.


Heat a pan add ghee and oil add mustard seeds,poppy seeds,cashews,cinnamon stick,cloves,star anise,bay leaf statute for few minutes and add onions satire well till the onions become golden brown add ginger garlic paste(you can add ginger slices and crushed garlic).add chilli,stir few minutes to go away ginger garlic raw smell.

Add turmeric powder and all veggies stir well statue for few mins, add tomato pure stir well and add chilli powder(if you don't blend tomatoes you can add finely chopped tomatoes) and add slat.Wait for few minutes till sides releasing oil.

After releasing oil add cooked rice(or you can add soaked rice directly with tomato mixture stir well and wait for few seconds and add 2 cups of water test the consistency if you want more softer you can more water cover lid cook it for 20 mins or in pressure cooker cook for 2 to 3 whistles )stir well add coriander leaves.Switch off the flame.serve with mint ratita ,plain raita and with plain yogurt or you can serve as it is.


  • You can make all spices powdered,add as powder(instead of directly using Masala seeds ) in this you can add all dry roast chana dal and coriander seeds aslo.

  • Make this recipe even leftover rice also.

  • You can make plain tomato rice without adding veggies.

  • If you using besi blla bath or vangi bath masala you can reduce chilli powder.
